Step 1: Deciding to adopt!
Adding a pet to your household is a big decision, and it’s important to be sure you and your new family member are on the same page! This takes lots of research and planning, because dogs need much more than a house with food and water. They need daily exercise, consistent veterinary care, play and toys, and lots and lots of love.
Dogs bond deeply with their humans. They trust and love their family. It’s wonderful to have the love of a dog, but it’s also a life-long commitment that could last 10-15 years. Caring for your dog must remain a priority even as your life and circumstances change. Your dog will depend on you for their health, comfort, and safety.
What to be ready for with your new family member:
– Walking your dog at least twice a day for 30 minutes.
– Training your dog so they understand what your family rules are (“stay”, “come”, “no”, “heel”, etc).
– Walking your dog even when it’s not nice weather out.
– Walking your dog even when you really don’t feel like it.
– Cleaning up after your dog in your home – chewing, potty training, etc.
– Engaging in stimulating activities with your dog – giving attention, throwing balls, belly rubs, walks, etc.
– Coordinating pet care when you travel.
– Taking financial responsibility for regular vet checks, emergency vet visits, preventatives, food, beds, bowls, leashes, toys, and other supplies.
– Making a 10-15 year commitment depending on breed and age of dog at adoption.
Special Considerations for Rescue Dogs
Rescue dogs are wonderful animals, but often have pasts of neglect/abuse, and need bunches of love and patience. Most often we don’t know anything about their background. They sometimes have never seen a leash, been in a crate, learned where they can and can’t go potty, or even had a normal meal. They often have never had a toy, never had their own bed, never felt safe or loved, never had good human interaction. They can be fearful, anxious, and not know whom they can trust. They need compassion, consistency, training, a routine, and a lot of love. You must be prepared to invest time and energy into creating positive, consistent routines and creating a loving bond.
Step 2: Applying!
